BAROCK Art, Science, Faith and Technology in the Contemporary Age

In the framework of the events organized by the Campania Region to celebrate the Baroque culture, the Councillorship for Cultural Heritage has endorsed the proposal of the MADRE Museum to mount a big collective exhibition titled “BAROCK – Art, Science, Faith and Technology in the Contemporary Age” which will run from December 12th to April 5th.

JOHNNIE SHAND KYDD

The British photographer Johnnie Shand Kydd (1959) was the visual biographer of the well-known and outrageous “Young British Artists” (YBAs) who established themselves internationally over the last decade gravitating around the most important London galleries: Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Sarah Lucas, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Sam Taylor Wood, to name but a few. Famous, controversial and often irreverent artists, veritable popstars of contemporary art whom Shand Kydd followed and captured in his lens.

Transit 3

Transit 3 is the third step of the homonym project that links young Neapolitan artists with artists coming from other cities of the Middle- East basin. After the experiences in Cairo and Istanbul (where Transit 2 is displayed until November 9th at PiST/// space), the MADRE Museum twins itself with Tel Aviv through the work of the Neapolitan artist Raffaella Crispino and the Israeli Eden Bannet.

As already experimented, the project is composed of two separated times and spaces: the first step takes place at the MADRE Museum Project Room from October 23rd to November 30th and the second one at the CCA in Tel Aviv from December 10th to January 30th 2010.
 

SPOT 2 A PIECE OF MY ART Roberto Amoroso

On Thursday 24th at 7 p.m. it opens A piece of my Art, a site-specific installation by Roberto Amoroso. This is the second exhibition of the SPOT series at Museum Madre’s Project Room.

SPOT is a project developed through a cycle of exhibitions dedicated to the young Neapolitan artists at their first exhibition experience. SPOT alternates with the series TRANSIT whose second step, which has just ended up, has re-opened on September 9th at the PiST space as a collateral event of the XI Istanbul Biennial.
SPOT was born with the objective of spotlighting for shot periods scenery often submerged and transversal. Its aim is facilitating a wider osmosis between the museum and the territory, following the Project Room’s mission to become an experimental lab for ideas, proposals and new project design.
 

Transit-2

Transit 2 is the second step, after the first one in Cairo, of the homonymous project. It is displaced in two different places and times. The first one is at Madre Museum Project Room from Wednesday July 1st, the second one is in Istanbul at PiSt/// Interdisciplinary Artist Space; the same exhibition will open in conjunction with the XI Istanbul Biennial.

Clemente: Shipwreck with the Spectator 1974-2004

After the exhibition in 2002 at the National Museum of Naples, the MADRE museum hosts an anthological exhibition dedicated to Francesco Clemente, 10 years after the important retrospective exhibition held at the Guggenheim museum of New York. Clemente returns to his home town and to the museum where in 2005 he worked for 4 months on a fresco of monumental proportions, shown in two different rooms, as well as on a ceramic floor that with the memory of childhood illustrated the ancient places and symbols of Naples.

Non si tocca

Non si tocca, a site-specific installation by Giuseppe Stellato, is the first exhibition of the SPOT series and will be held in the Project Room of the Madre Museum.

SANTIAGO SIERRA: Ponticelli

Ponticelli is the new project conceived and realized in Naples by Santiago Sierra and exhibited at the Madre Museum for the first time. This project faces the Rom’s issue and, in particular, takes the recent events of the Rom community in Ponticelli as a symbol of the new wave of intolerance towards the immigrants and xenophobia spread out in our country, as well as in the rest of the Western World, further to the economic crisis.

Transit 1 is the first phase of the homonymous project presented in two locations and at two different times: the first stage in the Project Room of the Museo Madre on Thursday 26 March, the second at Cairo with the reopening of the same exhibition, on the premises of the Townhouse Gallery, 24 May next.

PIERO STEINLE LAUGHTER PROJECT

From March 7th through March 23rd the MADRE Museum will host the video-installation “1-2-3 Laugh” by artist Piero Steinle, in collaboration with the Goethe Institute.
Piero Steinle’s exhibition is part of a national project called OMNIAPOIS and promoted by Goethe Institute Italia.

The exhibition Alighiero & Boetti. Putting the World into Art 1993-1962 illustrates the creative approach of Alighiero Boetti (1940-1994), a “singular” artist who over time achieved “plurality”. Born in Turin, he was one of the leading figures in the Arte Povera and
Conceptual Art movements. During the course of his life he explored multiple disciplines ranging from music to mathematics, from philosophy to esotericism, from African cultures to those of the Middle and Far East to which he frequently travelled.
 

CEAL FLOYER

The first solo show by the British artist Ceal Floyer to be organized in an Italian public space opens at the Madre Museum in Naples on the 29th of November 2008.
The exhibition curated by Mario Codognato presents a selection of works, with a site-specific revisitation developed for the MADRE spaces.
Around 15 works including video, installations and sculptures provide an overview of Ceal Floyer’s artistic development. The show will be installed in the new second floor space previously occupied by the bookshop and now devoted to temporary exhibitions, on the mezzanine and in part in the Project Room.

ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG Travelling '70-76

This exhibition brings together a selection of works by Robert Rauschenberg from the “Cardboards”, “Venetians”, “Hoarfrosts” and “Jammers” series. Rauschenberg’s interest in other cultures and the experiences he gained while travelling are reflected in these works created between 1970 and 1976. Largely overlooked since their production, they are now for the first time receiving the attention they deserve. On its third stop after Porto and Munich, the exhibition will open at the Madre Museum in Naples on the 22nd of October, the artist’s birthday. This international project, curated by Mirta d’Argenzio, has been organized by the Fundação de Serralves and the Museu de Arte Contemporânea of Porto and co-produced by the Haus der Kunst and the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Donna Regina of Naples.

GEORG BASELITZ

Following the great success of the exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the Museo MADRE of Naples will host a broad-ranging retrospective dedicated to the work of the German artist, Georg Baselitz, as of 17th of May 2008. More than 10 years after the last exhibition in Italy, the MADRE will present a complete and in-depth overview of the work of Baselitz through about 120 works, including paintings, drawings and sculptures dating from his earliest works in the 1960s to the present day.
The exhibition, curated by Norman Rosenthal, one of the greatest scholars of the artist, offers a unique opportunity to observe, study and analyse Baselitz’s oeuvre over a period of five decades.

MADRE is staging the first one-man show in an Italian museum institution by Thomas Struth, one of the leading exponents of contemporary photography.
The exhibition traces the principal stages of his remarkable career that began in the late Seventies with black and white views of the urban landscape. Using a meticulous and sober photographic technique, Struth recounts the story of the cities and the values of the inhabitants to be found within the diverse architectural forms.

Urban Superstar Show

From April 24 to May 25, 2009 the MADRE will host the exhibition Urban Superstar, a curatorial project by Napoli COMICON. This independent exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Soprintendenza al Polo Museale, Naples, - an historic partner of the International Comics Show – has been welcomed by the Madre as a convenient tool to promote the contamination between art and youth creativity, music and new languages, inaugurated some time ago with the Madrenalina and Apemadre events held at the “Madre & Vino” bar-cafeteria of the museum.

THE MADRE MUSEUM PRESENTS TWO WORKS DONATED BY FRANCESCO CLEMENTE

Francesco Clemente has donated two paintings to the MADRE which will be displayed from October 30th in the permanent collection of the museum on the 2nd floor. The director Eduardo Cicelyn expressed his gratitude to the artist and said he is “extremely happy for this donation which enriches the collection of the Madre with two historic works, remarkable in the way they relate to the tradition and the cultural imagery of our land”.

WILLIAM KENTRIDGE "I am not me, the horse is not mine ” Lecture/Performance with video installation

On the occasion of the exhibition "Streets of the city and other tapestries” at the Museum of Capodimonte, the MADRE on Saturday November 14th at 8pm will play host to “I am not me, the horse is not mine”, a work in the form of video installation and lecture-performance produced and interpreted by William Kentridge.
