On the occasion of the America's Cup World Series, the most famous and prestigious tournament in the history of sailing, which will stop off in Naples from 11th to 15th April 2012, MADRE museum prolongs the great retrospective exhibition dedicated to Fausto Melotti until April 16th .

Francesca Grilli's research focuses on the metaphores of language. Her constant interest for sound, pursued in all its forms and registers, enshrouds the space of action of the spectator in order to create, with alternative methods, a kind of communication which is sensorial rather than verbal. The result of her performances being, therefore, a method of production that finds its genesis within the sinergical relationship that the artist builds with the historical and anthropological reality she experiences.

LUIGI PRESICCE. The cherishing of blood in the carousel of bulls

Luigi Presicce is a lateral figure in the contemporary art scene. In his research liturgy and popular culture, sacred and profane, Masonry and Alchemy live together in a suspended harmony generating situations and surreal and timeless appearances, in which the viewer is at the same time actor and witness.

The Women and the Social Justice

23rd February 5.30p.m. Following the debates about "Art and Money" (23rd January 2012) and "Constitutional principles of the common goods"(16th February 2012) Madre Museum hosts the public debate about “the Women and the Social Justice” on Thursday, February 23rd at 5:30 p.m., as part of the exhibition of Andrej Kulun?i? “Are you optimistic about the future?”, curated by Radmila Iva Jankovi? | Adriana Rispoli | Eugenio Viola. The meeting will be moderated by by Paola Saracini, professor of Labour Law at the Sannio University. The meetings are organized as part of the work “Distributive Justice”: an interactive and ongoing project of the Croatian artist that develops itself in many ways according to different places through discussions, lectures, interviews and forums. The most important part of this work is the participation of the public, involved by the artist to reflect upon topical issues.

Cristian Chironi's work seeks to create a connection between different levels of research: reality and fiction, remembrance and modernity, conflict and integration, material and immaterial through a plurality of languages via which the body has a leading role, either directly or indirectly. A distinctive feature of his work is the desire to create a link between an image and the imagination.

Following the first debate about "Art and Money", Madre Museum hosts other two public debates about "Fiscal compact: when the remedy might be worse than the disease" on Thursday, Feb. 16th at 6 p.m. , and “the Women and the Social Justice” on Thursday, February 23rd at 5:30 p.m., as part of the exhibition of Andrej Kulun?i? “Are you optimistic about the future?”, curated by Radmila Iva Jankovi? | Adriana Rispoli | Eugenio Viola. The meeting will be moderated by the Francesco Sbordone, professor of Private Law at the Second University of Naples and by Paola Saracini, professor of Labour Law at the Sannio University.

Filippo Berta creates coral performances by engaging common people with the aim of analisying and underlining the levels of tension exsisting within social relationships. His research is based on the opposition between the countraries positive-negative, full-empty, implotion-explotion, light- dark, joining-break-up, individual-plural; in order to reach a state of transitional balance through these dicotomies apparently irreconciliable.

Following the exhibition dedicated to Armando De Stefano, MADRE Museum continues its reflection on the artistic history of the City of Naples by presenting an exhibition on Mario Persico, one of the most active and influential figures in the production of art and the cultural debate in southern Italy.
The 17 works presented - an anthology in which his earlier achievements are joined by new works specifically created for the occasion – enable us to identify four major areas of research within the artist's output: sculpture, practicable objects, theater and eroticism.

BABEL

From 23 November to 3 December, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MSU) in Zagreb is presenting Babel, a project by the Italian artist Francesco Jodice.
The project is realised through a collaboration between the MSU and the MADRE Museum of Naples, with the support of the Italian Institute of Culture in Zagreb, City Office for Education, Culture and Sport of the City of Zagreb, and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia.
As part of the above mentioned collaborative project, the MADRE museum will host the exhibition of the Croatian artists Andreja Kulunčić, from 19 December 2011 to7 February 2012,

Babel will transform the large digital facade of the Zagreb Museum into an open-space blog, a social interface which will enable its citizens to publicly express their intentions, strategies, views and disagreements.

L'URLO DEL SUD [“THE CRY OF THE SOUTH”]

Since May 15, MADRE Museum will host “Auto-Theater”, the big European retrospective dedicated to the Austrian sculptor Franz West.
The exhibition, a tribute to the great Viennese artist, gathers over 80 of his most significant works from the Adaptives (Passstücke) and the collages of the Seventies, passing through papier-mâché sculptures, furniture, site-specific installations until the latest productions made for public spaces.

The third exhibition of SPOT series, Molto visibile segretamente nascosto, by Donatella Di Cicco, opens Friday, April 16th at 19.00 at the Project Room of MADRE Museum.

SPOT is a project that develops through a cycle of exhibitions dedicated to young Neapolitan artists with the purpose of turning the spotlights on a still unknown and transversal art scenery. It alternates with TRANSIT, another exhibition programme, which builds up a network with the Middle East, whose fourth step Napoli – Salonicco will be opened at the end of May.

WILLIAM KENTRIDGE "I am not me, the horse is not mine ” Lecture/Performance with video installation  

On the occasion of the exhibition "Streets of the city and other tapestries” at the Museum of Capodimonte, the MADRE on Saturday November 14th at 8pm will play host to “I am not me, the horse is not mine”, a work in the form of video installation and lecture-performance produced and interpreted by William Kentridge.

The British photographer Johnnie Shand Kydd (1959) was the visual biographer of the well-known and outrageous “Young British Artists” (YBAs) who established themselves internationally over the last decade gravitating around the most important London galleries: Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Sarah Lucas, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Sam Taylor Wood, to name but a few. Famous, controversial and often irreverent artists, veritable popstars of contemporary art whom Shand Kydd followed and captured in his lens.

THE MADRE MUSEUM PRESENTS TWO WORKS DONATED BY FRANCESCO CLEMENTE

Francesco Clemente has donated two paintings to the MADRE which will be displayed from October 30th in the permanent collection of the museum on the 2nd floor. The director Eduardo Cicelyn expressed his gratitude to the artist and said he is “extremely happy for this donation which enriches the collection of the Madre with two historic works, remarkable in the way they relate to the tradition and the cultural imagery of our land”.

Transit 3

Transit 3 is the third step of the homonym project that links young Neapolitan artists with artists coming from other cities of the Middle- East basin. After the experiences in Cairo and Istanbul (where Transit 2 is displayed until November 9th at PiST/// space), the MADRE Museum twins itself with Tel Aviv through the work of the Neapolitan artist Raffaella Crispino and the Israeli Eden Bannet.

As already experimented, the project is composed of two separated times and spaces: the first step takes place at the MADRE Museum Project Room from October 23rd to November 30th and the second one at the CCA in Tel Aviv from December 10th to January 30th 2010.
 

SPOT 2 A PIECE OF MY ART Roberto Amoroso

On Thursday 24th at 7 p.m. it opens A piece of my Art, a site-specific installation by Roberto Amoroso. This is the second exhibition of the SPOT series at Museum Madre’s Project Room.

SPOT is a project developed through a cycle of exhibitions dedicated to the young Neapolitan artists at their first exhibition experience. SPOT alternates with the series TRANSIT whose second step, which has just ended up, has re-opened on September 9th at the PiST space as a collateral event of the XI Istanbul Biennial.
SPOT was born with the objective of spotlighting for shot periods scenery often submerged and transversal. Its aim is facilitating a wider osmosis between the museum and the territory, following the Project Room’s mission to become an experimental lab for ideas, proposals and new project design.
 

Transit-2

Transit 2 is the second step, after the first one in Cairo, of the homonymous project. It is displaced in two different places and times. The first one is at Madre Museum Project Room from Wednesday July 1st, the second one is in Istanbul at PiSt/// Interdisciplinary Artist Space; the same exhibition will open in conjunction with the XI Istanbul Biennial.

Clemente: Shipwreck with the Spectator 1974-2004

After the exhibition in 2002 at the National Museum of Naples, the MADRE museum hosts an anthological exhibition dedicated to Francesco Clemente, 10 years after the important retrospective exhibition held at the Guggenheim museum of New York. Clemente returns to his home town and to the museum where in 2005 he worked for 4 months on a fresco of monumental proportions, shown in two different rooms, as well as on a ceramic floor that with the memory of childhood illustrated the ancient places and symbols of Naples.

SANTIAGO SIERRA: Ponticelli

Ponticelli is the new project conceived and realized in Naples by Santiago Sierra and exhibited at the Madre Museum for the first time. This project faces the Rom’s issue and, in particular, takes the recent events of the Rom community in Ponticelli as a symbol of the new wave of intolerance towards the immigrants and xenophobia spread out in our country, as well as in the rest of the Western World, further to the economic crisis.

Urban Superstar Show

From April 24 to May 25, 2009 the MADRE will host the exhibition Urban Superstar, a curatorial project by Napoli COMICON. This independent exhibition, organized in collaboration with the Soprintendenza al Polo Museale, Naples, - an historic partner of the International Comics Show – has been welcomed by the Madre as a convenient tool to promote the contamination between art and youth creativity, music and new languages, inaugurated some time ago with the Madrenalina and Apemadre events held at the “Madre & Vino” bar-cafeteria of the museum.

Piero Steinle’s exhibition is part of a national project called OMNIAPOIS and promoted by Goethe Institute Italia.

The exhibition Alighiero & Boetti. Putting the World into Art 1993-1962 illustrates the creative approach of Alighiero Boetti (1940-1994), a “singular” artist who over time achieved “plurality”. Born in Turin, he was one of the leading figures in the Arte Povera and
Conceptual Art movements. During the course of his life he explored multiple disciplines ranging from music to mathematics, from philosophy to esotericism, from African cultures to those of the Middle and Far East to which he frequently travelled.
 

CEAL FLOYER

The first solo show by the British artist Ceal Floyer to be organized in an Italian public space opens at the Madre Museum in Naples on the 29th of November 2008.
The exhibition curated by Mario Codognato presents a selection of works, with a site-specific revisitation developed for the MADRE spaces.
Around 15 works including video, installations and sculptures provide an overview of Ceal Floyer’s artistic development. The show will be installed in the new second floor space previously occupied by the bookshop and now devoted to temporary exhibitions, on the mezzanine and in part in the Project Room.

ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG Travelling '70-76

This exhibition brings together a selection of works by Robert Rauschenberg from the “Cardboards”, “Venetians”, “Hoarfrosts” and “Jammers” series. Rauschenberg’s interest in other cultures and the experiences he gained while travelling are reflected in these works created between 1970 and 1976. Largely overlooked since their production, they are now for the first time receiving the attention they deserve. On its third stop after Porto and Munich, the exhibition will open at the Madre Museum in Naples on the 22nd of October, the artist’s birthday. This international project, curated by Mirta d’Argenzio, has been organized by the Fundação de Serralves and the Museu de Arte Contemporânea of Porto and co-produced by the Haus der Kunst and the Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Donna Regina of Naples.

GEORG BASELITZ

Following the great success of the exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, the Museo MADRE of Naples will host a broad-ranging retrospective dedicated to the work of the German artist, Georg Baselitz, as of 17th of May 2008. More than 10 years after the last exhibition in Italy, the MADRE will present a complete and in-depth overview of the work of Baselitz through about 120 works, including paintings, drawings and sculptures dating from his earliest works in the 1960s to the present day.
The exhibition, curated by Norman Rosenthal, one of the greatest scholars of the artist, offers a unique opportunity to observe, study and analyse Baselitz’s oeuvre over a period of five decades.

MADRE is staging the first one-man show in an Italian museum institution by Thomas Struth, one of the leading exponents of contemporary photography.
The exhibition traces the principal stages of his remarkable career that began in the late Seventies with black and white views of the urban landscape. Using a meticulous and sober photographic technique, Struth recounts the story of the cities and the values of the inhabitants to be found within the diverse architectural forms.
 

RACHEL WHITEREAD
