A landscape of grids, meshes and cages, structures rigid as iron forming places of segregation and imprisonment, violence and cruelty. The sharp weaves of the textures, the minimal forms of the design and the glittering coldness of steel unequivocally evoke the impenetrability of a prison space, the image of harrowing torture, the grievous memories of summary trials and inquisitorial obscurantist tribunals. Through a simple expansion of scale Mona Hatoum transforms kitchen implements into threatening and terrifying architectures, disquieting forms that not only acquire the freedom to become “other”, but the capacity to arouse wonder. Through a marked semantic shift in what is most familiar, Hatoum recreates an alienating and visionary environment with a subversive content, precisely because the aesthetic experience is never separated from the humdrum.
