Maurizio Cattelan
Untitled
2008
Courtesy :
Drawing on a photographic self-portrait by Francesca Woodman, Cattelan conceives this image of coercion and torture, with the position of the figure evoking a crucifixion, but without precise iconographic parallels (the figure is not nailed to two posts and is not presented frontally). The installation draws its disquieting force from the inversion of the spatial coordinates from the floor to the wall, to represent a feminine condition of subjugation and prostration, negation and erasure of identity, since it is impossible to view the figure’s face, buried in a white sheet which recalls a hospital bed or of deathbed.
