Giulia Piscitelli

Capturing a glimpse of the Baroque cloister of the Charterhouse of San Martino without permits or professional equipment. With this impromptu gesture, Piscitelli endows an ancient symbol of the Memento Mori – closely related in Naples to the traditional cult of the dead – with a concrete and immediate presence through a tangible object which, with a Pop verve, constitutes the sole note of colour in the otherwise black and white image. Made in the open air as an incursion into the flow of everyday life, the work has its roots in the tradition of the happening, which promotes the ephemeral and mutable as well as a rapprochement between art and life. The choice of medium reflects the idea that the purpose of the art operation is not the reproduction of perceived reality but the recreation of an equally latent, elusive and mysterious reality like an alchemical transmutation. This transmutation is echoed by the anamorphism produced by the pixels of the low resolution digital shot, which opens up the photographic image to a multiplicity of suggestions and interpretations.
