Three elegant women’s shoes faces with velvet and three Capodimonte china dishes are arranged next to each other on a wooden wedge-shaped bracket covered with a plastic laminate that imitates marble. Each of Steinbach's works consists of the choice, composition and exhibition of disparate objects, refined, useful or superfluous, which the artist finds and removes from everyday reality and which he collects in the spirit of a true collector. Steinbach takes possession of them, isolates them and places them next to other objects of different kinds. The encounter of these pieces in an unexpected relationship and context translates their specific psychological projections and visual connections into a space open to the imagination. Like characters, the objects have a stage presence and an identity, to the point where – as the artist reveals – they often provide the outline for a
character and his story. They are portraits made from everyday details lacking any apparent narrative plot, perhaps stemming from direct contact with the artist. “I choose objects”,
Steinbach explains, “with the attitude of the flâneur: I walk, I observe something exhibited in a shop window, at the flea market or at the home of a collector, but the right combination is only created in my mind after a while. Let’s say I recognize the possibility of taking circumstances seriously, what people call life's coincidences.”
