Untitled (1960) forms part of the Ray Gun series, which the artist started working on in the late fifties. An example is the papier-mâché sculpture Empire (Papa) Ray Gun of 1959, now in the Museum of Modern Art, New York. In 1962 he also made it the theme of a happening, Ray Gun Theatre, held in a shop in East Second Street, New York. From observation of everyday life in the American metropolis and the stimulus of the things happening around him, Oldenburg distils essential symbols of the present. One of these is the T shape, which on a page of his notebook the artist generally associates with the Ray Gun: toy guns with sound or light effects, produced in the United States from 1929 on following the success of the Buck Rogers comic books. The artist sees it as an object with a special significance, as a form alluding to play and a form of deception, receptive to a multiplicity of ideas. In other words the Ray Gun is a set of contradictions and paradoxes: it is the unknowable pursued through all its disguises and counterfeits.
We don't copy the objects we use, we try to transform them and we hope they go on transforming as you look at them. The idea of endless public dialogue... visual dialogue... ...
