Portrait of a Young Woman with Child Full Length

1995

Collezione privata

On display from 2009 to 2012 (April)

To create images that enter directly into the consciousness of the public on a profound figurative level, Tillmans opted from the start for photographs carefully built up in the
studio but looking like quick snapshots taken by chance, casually and unprofessionally, so that in Portrait of a Young Woman with Child Full Length it is not clear where the light
comes from. It is only by examining the photograph carefully that we realize the subtle interplay of lines and geometries presiding over the composition of the subject, just as happens in a painting. Look in particular at the very beautiful made-up face of the woman portrayed, framed in the salmon pink of the window shutter which encloses the window behind her. The shutter isolates her face, suggesting the portrait-like quality of a scene which at first might seem domestic in the setting and because of the presence of the boy. The headphones, record player, loudspeakers and cables counterpoint the space and define the musical ambit in which the woman portrayed moves with natural, familiar sensuousness and not without a certain consciousness of her value, as suggested by the pose and the bikini/lingerie, an essential element of the “ambiguity of the case”, necessary to short-circuit the image. The vocabulary adopted by Tillmans, however, conceals all these artifices, avoiding the risk of intellectualism.
