In the early sixties the American art scene was dominated by the Abstract Expressionism of the New York School and Jackson Pollock's Action Painting, an artistic practice notable for the rejection in an existentialist key all rational control over the emergence of the artist's inwardness. In this cultural climate Warhol reacted by choosing to reproduce, simply and anonymously, the reality around him. His iconographic subjects were absolutely banal and lacking in any aura, but they now became the protagonists of the visual world of American society. The artist did not limit himself to presenting icons and symbols of the urban landscape. He created a new artistic language by presenting the public with
absolutely neutral objects, chosen from those most directly familiar to the American collective imagination, from a Campbell's soup can to Spalding tennis balls, advertisement for electric appliances and popular comic-book images.
