Alongside large-scale works Clemente also develops publishing projects dealing with artist’s books. These include Ex Libris Chenonceau, created in collaboration with American Beat poet Allen Ginsberg [Newark, 1926 – New York, 1997] and published in 2000 copies by Kalakshetra Press of Madras (India) in 1995. For this project Clemente executed in 1994-95 a series of 108 images, as many as the beads of the mala, a sort of rosary used by Hindus and Buddhists during songs or prayers. Full of rapid notes, these drawings are the expression of a thought that proceeds by accumulating images and reveal a circular process of continuous invention and revision of ideas developed through the reformulation of recurrent iconographic motifs.
The book is named after the Chenonceau castle, in the French Loire valley, and draws on the ancient tradition of ex-libris which in the West was established in the same year as the birth of the press (1448) and was revived at the beginning of 1900 by Art Nouveau. The Latin term ex libris, which literally means “from the books”, referred to the labels with vignettes, drawings and sayings that were stuck or printed on books to contain the name of the owner, but also the relationship of affinity and alliance between the owner and the author or the content of the book.
