Dioctionary is a dictionary that explains the latent meaning of the words as well as their manifest meaning. Words which, though apparently banal, can be sharp as daggers, and as such they can cut the logical thread of thought, which the artist translates visually as a herd of beheaded white animals. The cold metal blades are echoed by the zip fastener that serves as curtain of the scene in the foreground. This element in particular draws on an ancient iconography of the Truth revealed by Time, represented as a lifted curtain or cloth. In Clemente’s work, though, the zip fastens, warning that every possibility of knowing the profound reality (the part of landscape on the background) is and will remain barred if the creation of the verbal symbol (the words written on the daggers in different languages) implies the loss of the image.
