In 2008 Clemente executes a series of twenty-one pen-and-ink drawings to be used as illustrations of a new short story by Salman Rushdie, In the South, appeared for the first time on May 18th, 2009 on the renowned American magazine The New Yorker and read on Radio New York on May 21st, 2009. The book, translated into Italian by Vincenzo Mantovani, is published by Electa exclusively for the Madre Museum and is attached to the catalogue of Francesco Clemente’s exhibition, Shipwreck with the Spectator. The story is set in southern India during the days preceding the tsunami. It tackles the theme of death and old age through the relationship of two octogenarian friends, Senior and Junior, who are engaged from the very first lines in a verbal duel on the concept of South. A very familiar concept for the artist, always travelling through the different souths of the world, Italy and Southern India, Jamaica – that he discovered in the 1990s – and South America, where, in Mexico City, he has opened a studio.
