Alpine Grip (1987) is a big canvas built on a labyrinthine composition: a jigsaw of irregular forms with a repeated linear texture alternately vertical and horizontal. In the foreground, the ornamental motif of the line composing the bottom gains the strength of the grip of two arms, as strong as the knot tied by two stretched ropes. The small alpine arch at the bottom is suggestive of the setting indicated in the title. The whole composition is based on a play of assonances and cross-references between images and words, which reminds of the rebus or the visual and graphic-symbolic intelligence of ideographic languages.
