In Perseverance and Vocazione delle scimmie (1982) Clemente draws on iconographies borrowed from the Renaissance tradition: respectively, the one of the donor and the buyer, the latter being often depicted in the altar pieces at the feet of the throne with a low profile as a mark of deference and respect; and the one of the penitent or hermit saint.
Clemente refers that he conceived the first painting after a dream he had on the first night he spent in his New York studio, in which the Pantheon protected him from a shower of excrements. The artist in fact depicts himself upside-down without any decorative element, standing out against a materic background mindful of the Informal tradition, and walking with long strides holding a small Pantheon in his arms: a symbol of his strong identity and of his cultural background which has its roots in the Greek-Roman tradition. The second painting instead represents the absurd, replacing the horse, the lion and the ram – traditional motifs of the religious iconography - with an ibex.
