Ave Ovo

1985

Private collection, Italy

In Ave Ovo of 1985 the connection between the enormous egg placed at the centre of the composition, the idea of the birth and the manifestation of the sacred is as immediate as the one created in 1472 by Piero della Francesca in his Madonna of Senigallia housed in Urbino. Moreover, Ave is the Latin allocution used by archangel Gabriel in the Annunciation to hail Mary. The image of the egg covered by a big fan draws on the pre-Christian tradition. In ancient times, in the Near East and in Egypt, the fan was in fact a symbol of royal dignity – and as such it was used during the ceremonies of kings and pharaohs. In the VIII-VII century b.C. it took on the value of sceptre among the Etrurians, while in the Classical period it became an attribute of Aphrodite. From an autobiographical point of view the egg is a tribute to Castel dell’Ovo whose original core dates from the time when the city of Naples was founded (VI century b.C.). The Castle owes its name to a medieval legend according to which Latin poet Virgil hid a magic egg in the foundations of the building to make them stronger. Another reference can be traced in Clemente’s interest for Orphic doctrines, developed after reading the Latin novel by Apuleius The Golden Ass in which the story of Love and Psyche interweaves with that of Isis and Osiris. The red and blue egg, half sky and half earth, is therefore a tribute to the God born from the egg, Osiris, also called Eros or Phanes: the sun that keeps the universe going. Out of the metaphor, the painting celebrates the hermaphrodite thought, invisibly conveyed by the image.
