Sharing a similar setting, Evolution and My Last Painting, both from 1985, seem to be two different episodes of the same story, or maybe of a dream, for the vagueness of the image suggested by the pictorial treatment and for their weird iconography, at the same time essential and difficult to decipher. The protagonist of both paintings is water, associable to the sea or to a big river, since its blue mass occupies entirely its lower part. A symbol of biological and psychic birth – especially for an artist born in a city like Naples –, the water holds the key to an important, secret safe, and stands out at the centre of My Last Painting.
