The head of a donkey emerges from a totally black background, looking at seven white frames or seven blackboards on which nothing has been written yet. With their empty centre they recall Le Pazienze of 1974, and bring the focus back on the framing process and on the creation of a territory of the image that for Clemente coincides more and more with the space of painting. The presence of the donkey instead, apparently refers to Joseph Beuys’s work Arena (1970-72) which has a curious subtitle: Where would I have got if I had been intelligent! Having found his field of action, Clemente abandons any objectual or conceptual research and adheres without reserve to the thin body of pictorial image.
