Disegno geometrico, 1960: Paolini’s first work is in the form of a geometrical squaring of the canvas in which the union of a cross and two diagonals divides up the surface into equal parts. Description must go no further: «The image of a painting is the selfsame elements that make it up». In Paolini’s art there are no other meanings, no allegories or symbols to interpret, but only the absolute, objective presentation of a physical entity. The only function attributed to the work is that of existing: the formal composition must present the materials in it without ever concealing any of them. Paolini’s name is often associated with the way he takes images from the history of art: Raphael, Poussin, Ingres offer a vast formal repertoire on which to draw. It is not a question of quoting – these are operations which aim to reveal the phenomenon of vision. The role of man is not defined in the attribution of significata but in the vision of a phenomenon which can be repeated ad infinitum. The history of art is the sedimentation of ever-different solutions to a single, unchanged need – that of beholding.
The two Untitled of 1962 are complementary works. In the first the Masonite appears to be a frame for the canvas, while in the second the two materials share the surface of the work. This type of operation reflects Paolini’s early work, in which he was concerned with showing the material composition of a painting.
