In 1962, following a visit to Andy Warhol’s studio, Rauschenberg discovered silk-screen printing, which allowed him to transfer pictures and photographs onto his works with
greater freedom in the use of colour and the choice of dimensions than that afforded by the collages or the various decalcomania techniques he had used until then, like the
transfer-drawings he produced to illustrate Dante’s Inferno in 1958-61. The outcome of these first experiments was Payload, in which the intense expressive quality of the
painting, produced with broad, bold brushstrokes reminiscent of the work of Hans Hartung and Willem de Kooning, was superimposed on the multiplicity of images taken from life through the technique of silk-screen printing: bedsprings, a mosquito, a key, a glass of water - photographed by Rauschemberg himself and also present in other works like the coeval Calendar – or a photograph reproducing soldiers around a US missile. This last subject was taken from an article on the Apollo space mission in which NASA was engaged in those years. In 1969 it inspired Rauschenberg to produce the engravings of the Stoned Moon Series, celebrating the moon landing by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. At the invitation of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the artist watched the landing from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.
