Steven Shearer
Nash
2005
The work of the Canadian artist with the use of paint, design and digital collage claims its cultural position reinterpreting images of the pop iconography accumulated over the years. Music plays a fundamental role in the aesthetic system of the artist. Acting both as an obsessioned fan and a maniacal anthropologist, the artist builds a visual encyclopedia of the North American anomalies expressed by heavy metal singers and by the legendary but forgotten acts of rock groups, of their fans and other satanical provincial poets. Through these fantasies Shearer researches the relations between autobiography and history, individuality and group dynamics, idolatry and collective identification. The subjects of his paintings that stylistically refer to German expressionism are figures on the fringe of society: portraits of androgynous figures, with long hair and female bodies. Live at Port Coquitlam is a homage to the suburb in Vancouver where Shearer grew up. A mix in which the cover of an album of the famous band Black Sabbath has been manipulated including the name Puffrockshitheater.
