McCarthy is considered among the most influential and revolutionary American contemporary artists. His works are about human degradation and perversion. Since the beginning of the '70s, when body art was gaining significance, his performances dug the themes of masturbation, sodomy and bestiality, using fake blood and minced meat just as in splatter cinema. These operations describe, deforming them, in carnival fashion, the American way of life fictitiously moralistic and absurdly consumeristic, the sneered but also main subject of his work. Many of his works discredit the myth of childhood, creating an atmosphere that explores the distance between the sweet world of Disney and the reality lived by young people. McCarthy materializes the most hidden fears, obsessions and bestiality creating a hybrid reality in which the characteristic traits of contemporary society become the psycopathies and hallucinations. In this work the artist seems to materialize and immortalize the moment when the animal, a deer, symbol of childhood sweetness and ingenuity is about to be killed by the hunter.
