Jake e Dinos Chapman
Forhead
1997
Fuck-Face (1994), Zygotic Acceleration (1995) and Tragic Anatomies (1996) are series of works where the Chapman brothers use the human body as a way to explore an aesthetics of horror. Manikins of children, marked by a realistic anthropomorphic appearance reveal at a second gaze monstrous figures of hermaphrodites on which all the genetic anomalies are manifested in absurd combinations of limbs, heads, legs, torsos sometimes fused together, with anuses, vaginas and erect penises in place of noses, ears and mouths. These works had titles which reflected the combined humour and capacity to shock often considered so typical of the brothers' work. The approach is typical of brit art: the monstrous bodies created by two artists become absurd and ironic representations of an age in which the natural body is being transformed into an identity reinforced by metal prostheses, modified by plastic surgery, bypasses, microchips, tattoos and piercings, genetic manipulation. The hybrid bodies of Chapman brothers do not want to glorify aberration but only to show an achievable possibility of reproduction in contemporary society.
