Pierre Bismuth

Bismuth has become one of the most representative exponents of conceptual art and one of the most interesting contemporary French artists. His work is technically and aesthetically heterogeneous and includes installations, photography and video. Bismuth uses the artistic language as instrument to examine our perception of reality, especially in relation with cultural products. With great sense of humour his works tend to destabilize prearranged codes and stimulate the viewer to develop critical ideas also when presented with cultural objects that have an obvious meaning. One of the most definite cultural references of his work regards the cinema and particularly Hollywood (he won the Oscar for the best screenplay in 2005 for Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind). In the series Following the right hand of the attention from the film of reference is totally shifted to the gestural expressiveness of the actor tracing the poetical imaginary line of his movements. In this way he creates works that combine different cultural worlds, like graffitism and cinema.
