Matthew Barney is today one of the most recognized artists of the contemporary scene. In his work the staging of the corporeal presence becomes a metaphor for the tensions to which a living organism is continually submitted. The Cremaster Cycle is a large work in progress divided into different chapters without a sequential order, which began in early '90s. The title takes its name for the cremaster muscle beneath the scrotum that moves the testicles. Each episode of Cremaster depicts, in a fantastic manner, a step in the formation and gestation of a foetus. The exploration of the infinite shades of identity and scientific and biological research are the central themes in Barney's work, which develops around the great mysteries of life and death. All his work leads the spectator into a parallel, entirely artificial world. The Ballad of Gary Gilmore is a photo taken by Cremaster 2 (1999), which hallucinating narrative structure is focused on the life and mythology surrounding Gary Gilmore, interpreted by the artist, and the possibility that Gilmore was the illegitimate grandson of Harry Houdini.
