The red thread of memory that constantly re-creates and transforms thought without a conscience follows all of Baselitz’s research: from the disturbing strength of the 1963 canvas up to the Remix cycle started in 2005, where he re-makes his own works, often introducing the title and year of the revisited work into the iconography of the new painting. The artist himself prefigures the new course in a text of 2001 entitled Was es ist [What it is], where he states: « I think the time has come to lay hands on my old things, my childhood drawings and the works done at school». So the subjects created in his teens and in the 1950s and 1960s appear once again: The Poet, The Eagle, The Shepherd, The Woodmen, The Nudes, The Hand up to and including Sujet populaire and the Orange Eater, which are now modernised, re-thought and re-proposed with a quick, firm painting on monumental-size canvas and large watercolour drawings. « Of course - explains the artist – there is a lot in common with the first version, but the new one is more suitable to the time because it has at least been made in a quick, clear-cut style, with greater detachment than in the past. You always end up shaking the model a little bit, going around it, adding new elements to it ». Holding the paintbrush in his right hand and a photograph in his left hand, Baselitz reinterprets his past works and, in actual fact, moves away from his own past and his own reality of so many years before, giving life to a systematic production developed as a sort of retrospective show arranged by the author himself.
