In 1959 Manzoni prepared a series of 45 Corpi d’aria (“Bodies of Air”): balloons with a maximum diameter of 80 cm blown up with his own breath, sealed and fixed on a metal tripod. Manzoni called them “pneumatic sculptures” and the buyers, if they wished, could also purchase, together with a special case, the “breath of the artist.”
These works led in 1960 to the series titled Fiati d’artista (“Artist’s Breaths”), which were larger. These works constituted the experimental models for a broader project, devised by the artist for a park with the creation of a group of Corpi d’aria, spherical as before, with a diameter of some 2.5 meters each. They were to be attached to an air compression device which would make them pulsate with a slow, unsynchronized rhythm.
