Alternating One to One Hundred and Vice Versa

Like the 1977 embroideries, the series of kilims En alternant d'un à cent et vice versa of 1993 follow a pattern of growth alternating black and white squares that the artist first devised in a drawing of 1976. A grid made up of a hundred squares, each subdivided into a hundred smaller squares, is the setting for a number progression in inverse proportion, at the end of which the number of items has remained the same, without any of them prevailing over the other. Born from the collaboration of twenty weavers and thirty French art schools, who have made the cartoons following the artist’s directions, the Kilims are a truly harmonious work, which the artist has put together like a film director, involving a host of people. Interestingly, these people do not remain in the shadow but, for once, they have a face which is reproduced in the 1993 catalogue published for the artist’s solo exhibition at the Magasin of Grenoble, for which the Kilims were originally conceived.
