The subtle linguistic play whereby Boetti is drawn to bring together similar words with opposite meanings, suggests him a newly-coined word – ononimo, born of the merging of “anonimo”, meaning "by an unknown author" and "omonimo" meaning "having the same name". In 1973 Boetti dedicates a new cycle of ball-point pen works to this concept, in which there are no more commas and the sheets are evenly filled by several people completely unknown to the author. Notwithstanding the repetitive nature of the gesture requested and the simple layout, each panel unveils a constant, understated modulation of chromatics and signics in contrast with the formal definition of the letters making up the title of the work. The ball-point pen works are not, indeed, "originals” in a strict sense, neither are they multiples or copies of it: instead, they are unique variations of one idea. Boetti questions the concept of "author", but does not yield to technical reproducibility. What he has produced is mainly a critical re-thinking of the artist’s role and working possibilities.
