Alighiero e Boetti, his creation of himself as a dual persona, is what leads the artist to delegate. Once he has formulated his idea, the artist hands over the actual realisation of the work to other people, people he doesn’t even know, simply explaining what to do. In Mettere al mondo il mondo (1972-73) is a conceptual work which looks like a painting where Boetti goes back to the lightness of a painted surface but creates it using basic materials like a ball-point pen and very basic techniques almost like those of a child. The way the commas are positioned hides a message that we can work out if we start at the top and then go down each column giving each comma the next letter of the alphabet. The idea of giving birth to the world in the title is achieved in two ways: first of all the artist asks a man and a woman each to complete one of the sheets of paper making up the work. Secondly, the artist contrasts the intuitive invention of the code with the long time it takes to carefully create something by hand or, in other words, the solitude of the artist as creator in contrast with the plurality of the hands that actually bring his idea to life, make their contribution to the work and give it its distinctive style. The biro lines do not change only according to the amount of ink coming out of the pen but also depending on who is using the pen and the user’s state of mind at the time.
