Alighiero Boetti adopted the idea of a double self from 1968 onwards when, using photo editing techniques, he was pictured as two twins, walking hand in hand down a tree-lined road. This portrait soon became a postcard which Boetti used to announce his new composite identity. The two twins are neither symmetrical nor mirror-images, however. In fact, when he took the two photographs, he made small changes to his physical appearance so that the end result would be a kind of “unequal repetition” This double identity which Boetti professes from then onwards is not the result of a personality split but the relationship between two equal but different things, like the right and left hand, waking and night-time thoughts, imagination and reason, children and adults, man and woman, or even a foreigner who embodies an unknown world and culture. To confirm the fact that Boetti is not suffering from some kind of personality disorder, in 1973 he puts the conjunction “and” between his first and last name: Alighiero e Boetti making it sound complete.
