12 forme a partire dal 10 giungo 1967 was the first work Boetti dedicated to Political geography, inspired by newspaper reports of continual outbreaks of war in various areas of the world, beginning with the battle of Sinai in 1967 between Egypt and Israel and then the separation of Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971. “I took the front page of “La Stampa” just as it was, which showed this map, then I cancelled the rest, just keeping the date – and made an engraving of it on a brass plate. I realised that every time there was a shape on the front page of a newspaper […] it meant something important had been produced”. At the top we can see the date the article was published. With no other indication or information, the outline of the countries involved is transformed into pure “form”, a product not of the artist’s imagination but of artillery attacks, air raids and diplomatic negotiations. The work as a whole demonstrates a rarefaction of the image which is more apparent than real, because the reflective surfaces absorb and reflect the reality around them, making it virtually a participant or observer of every distant place and event.

Territori occupati (Occupied territories) of 1969 is strictly connected with this subject. It's a rapresentation of the Sinai Peninsulan which the first wife of the artist, Annemarie Sauzeau, embroideried on toile. The solution of replacing the figure of the territory with a pattern anticipates the Mappe (Maps) that Boetti will create in Afghanistan from 1971.
I always find myself talking about the notion of double, which […] is present in all my work. The truth is that it is a natural reality: it is incontrovertible that a cell ...
