If the Column made out of die-cut paper – the kind you use for cakes – is an ironic reflection on the traditions of sculpture as used in architecture and monuments, Mimetico (1966) on the other hand, is a cutting response to the tachiste tradition, part of the Informal European Movement. Their paintings were formed by large, flat areas of colour, and there is no notion of composition or representation, simply total reliance on the expressive powers of paint itself. The camouflage fabric that Boetti hung on the wall as if it was a picture is very much the same. It, too, is a canvas surface with flat areas of colour which do not aim to represent or imitate reality in any way. Thus, although Boetti uses material which has nothing to do with painting he produces a picture. The actual title of the work “Camouflage” on the one hand explains, somewhat tautologically, what material he used i.e. military camouflage fabric but, on the other, it also questions the concept of “imitation of the real world” which is something painting has always tried to do right from its mythological origins.
