The postal works are all strongly pictorial in character as is obvious from this particular picture with its bright colours and romantic image of the waning moon. This image is repeated in different patterns, in opposition to the firm, unchanging semi-circular-shaped stamp of the One Hotel, the hotel Boetti opened in Kabul in 1971. The order and way in which the 24 stamps in sets of three are arranged is different on each envelope so in some way describes the different phases of the moon’s cycle. Another key element in the work is the postmarks, which recount the envelopes’ various travels and the different hands they’ve passed through. The name and address of the recipient is hand-written by the artist in different ways, reflecting not only the oriental aesthetic whereby writing forms an integral part of a picture, but also conveys the idea that a letter is the product of a relationship which is maintained over space and time. Space and time whose strong, relentless and inevitable rhythm is marked out by numbers.
