Boetti started to become interested in the postal system at the end of the Sixties, realising the multiple communicative and aesthetic opportunities it offered. Serie di merli disposti a intervalli regolari lungo gli spalti di una muraglia is a work in progress which he started in 1971 and continued all his life. It consists of a sequence of 13 telegrams he sent to the gallery owner Gian Enzo Sperone, following a principle of exponential increase beginning at the same starting date. The first telegram, sent on May 4 1971 said “two days ago it was May 2, 1971; the second, sent on 6 May, said: “four days ago it was May 2” and so on, with the time interval doubling each time. The last telegram, sent on 5 October 1993 said: “8,192 days ago it was May 2 1971”. The mathematical calculation is so precise it challenges every measure or prediction, as the blank space on the board demonstrates. It has been left so the artist can mount a 14th telegram there in the event he was still alive in 2017. The large time-scale that the work incorporates is reflected in the form which - as the title says – is like a long fortified wall with merlons transforming time into continuous space.
