After his early work at the end of the Sixties, described as taking their inspiration from Surrealism and Cézanne, at the beginning of the Seventies Steinbach turned to minimal painting and, at the end of 1979, with his Display #7 created for Artspace of New York, began to map out a personal way forward by creating installations and assemblages of objects taken from houses, streets and, sometimes, museums. This interest in objects led him to collaborate with Fashion Moda and Group Material and, from 1983, to create furniture and containers, as well as photographing the homes of his friends.
Following an interest as a “contemporary archaeologist”, Steinbach interpreted
these objects taken from everyday life as fetishes which give evidence of the relationships and moods of contemporary times. His intention was to explore the relationship between the present time and “things” from a psychological point of view as well, by organizing “mental” compositions and mingling the roles of artist, collector and curator.
Untitled is a simulation in which a piece of modern antique furniture with drawers in disarray – yet another piece of contemporary furniture – acts as a container for other collectables, such as boxes, games and pawns.
From the mid-Nineties on Steinbach produced objects for film sets and took up scene design and the use of lighting and sound on sets.
