In the preparatory drawings for the paintings of the Orangenesser [Orange eater] (1982) Baselitz studies the subject in its individual elements and in multiple variations in iconography, composition and expression. The affirmative softness of charcoal or chalk, as well as the intensity of their blacks already prefigure the rich painting of the final work, where powerful brushstrokes construct the figure and modulate colour in tones and shades, in lines and spots. The use of hard, sharp traits, often articulated in straight lines, derives from woodcut or xylography, an ancient Chinese printing technique consisting in engraving wood blocks with a gouge. Woodcut developed in Italy and Germany in the last decades of the 15th century thanks to outstanding figures like the German Albrecht Dürer, and was later revived in the 1910s by the German Expressionists of Die Brücke [The Bridge].
