A technical accident – two parts of a Hero which don’t fit together properly – gives Baselitz, in 1966, an idea for a kind of art which is free from historical-literary content, anecdotal references or realistic description yet which cannot be classified as abstract either. The first works of this kind are Streifenbilder or Fragmented pictures where the subject appears to be broken up into horizontal strips and then put back together again but in the wrong place, thus shaping the illusory space of the picture. By dividing up the space, Baselitz achieves the kind of art which is both figurative and non-iconic, avoiding the opposition between realism and abstraction. The breaks in the work prevent any easy reading of the image, though the image resists, and they constitute a new, original response to the problem of how to organize the canvas, the relationship between figure and background and between overall image and fragments. The subject matter, which is generally rustic or rural in nature, is described using broad, dense, bright brush-strokes, and the borders of the various strips blend in to form part of the painting’s overall symphony of colour. These paintings are organised in additional registers like different parts of a mosaic, and they remind us of the collage technique and the different facets of cubist de-structuring. The painting is a tribute to the surrealist Antonin Artaud (1896–1948). Baselitz puts a G before the name of the French writer, which is his own initial, as a kind of posthumous declaration of solidarity for his suffering and membership of his Theatre of cruelty (1932-33). A horribly functional kind of poetry that physically assaults the public and forces them to change.
