The 1963 Idols series is a reflection on the ideological and moral legacy of Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia, achieved through a visionary realism which evokes a strange spiritual malaise capable of deforming material and thought to such an extent that the result is hybrid and formless; disturbing beings like the enormous insect described by Franz Kafka in his 1915 novel, The Metamorphosis. These creatures are born of a sick consciousness where reason still prevails, where everyday thought can no longer separate itself from the images of the night, and dream sequences mix with what appears to be real until they take over completely. This is something the painting Aus der Traum [From a dream] suggests, also painted in 1963 (oil on canvas, private collection), where a monstrous being acquires a three-dimensional body whose disturbing shadow is projected onto the background. A spiritual malaise which Baselitz represents as a headless, winged, Germanic idol on a large black Teutonic cross which neatly divides up the canvas and symbolises the cardinal points forming the stronghold of National Socialism: faith and reason, religion and military discipline. Baselitz highlights the enormous schism between thinking mind and feeling body, between spiritualism and materialism, between East and West in post-war Germany divided by the wall. In this sense, the provocative nature of Baselitz’s images – which were extremely violent for the period – constitutes a call to the public to exercise their critical conscience. “The one thing I have never been able to escape from – said the artist – is Germany and the fact that I am German”.
