In the framework of the ‘return to origins’ represented by the Remix cycle, Baselitz recalls a bygone age, sometimes revisiting art works that are viewed as ideological and exemplary expressions of the culture of the time. This is the case with Moderner Maler (Remix) [Modern Painter (Remix)] of 2007, where a shocked-looking figure in ragged clothes like the Heroes Baselitz painted in the 1960s, is sitting astride a typical Neoplastic painting by Piet Mondrian (Amersfoort, The Netherlands, 1872 – New York, USA, 1944), made up of the essential articulation of black straight lines and primary colours on a white background. Generally acknowledged as the father of modernist Avant-garde and guardian of a rationalist positivism – adopted by post-WW2 Western democracies – around 1920 Mondrian had theorised the module of the cross as the absolute, all-inclusive depiction of the world and of a (human) reality that by its own nature is made up of matter and soul. Although more lively and reassuring than the Teutonic cross appearing on the background in the Idols cycle of 1963, the cross Baselitz reproduces in this painting is very much like a swastika, which seems to denounce the puritan violence of an abstract rationalism that has lost all contact with the real world, and sacrificed the spirit of German Romanticism.
