The pictures on the theme of the Orange Eater have a subject-matter which is, in itself, banal and their layout is simple and essential. It is the intense quality of the paint that gives body and life to the works. Baselitz mixes abstract and figurative art, chiaroscuro and coloured shadows to build a composition which is rich in symbols and colour, and the figure seems to be carved out of the background rather than painted onto it. The small size of the canvas – which is unusual for Baselitz – can be attributed to careful reflection on the works of the Die Brücke German expressionists. The artist has always denied any kind of connection with this tradition because he cannot share their belief in the redemption of the world through art. Despite this, work that Baselitz produced after 1980 has obvious references to works by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and, particularly, Emil Nolde. Many of these, including Orange Eater are a reaction to pre-Nazi German Expressionism and the Eighties’ form of Expressionism, whose international success was confirmed in 1981 by the A New Spirit in Painting exhibition organised by the Royal Academy in London. The artist explains his connection with German tradition in these terms “Like any European, I have always loved Expressionist works. I admire them because they painted the kind of thing my father’s generation despised. Their rejection (social) makes them particularly interesting in my view, but as a man, not as an artist.
