From March 1979 to February 1980 Baselitz works on Strassenbild or Street picture, originally conceived for the 1980 Venice Biennial as one large painting made of 18 panels. As in the following series of the Strandbild or Beach picture (1980- 81), the figures represented are impressions drawn from the everyday life the author experiences around him. The small size of the single elements points to the artist's parallel engraving activity and his tendency to open up frontiers between different artistic languages. The images, constructed with earthy colours and unusually bright tones, are dominated by a large dark dot (inspired by Jean Fautrier’s Hostages and Jean Debuffet’s haute pâte) which moves on the surface in continuous evolutions, constantly transforming its own shape and relationship with the magmatic background it emerges from. The arrangement on two overlapping rows reminds us of 19th century museum displays, but the sequence of images outlines a continuous frieze, similar to a series of photographs or to scenes edited in an abstractionist film. In both cases the artist draws inspiration from everyday life, either experienced directly or just observed from outside, to recount the constant shifting and changing of things. A similar conception is proposed later in the work 45 (1988-89, Kunsthaus, Zurich): an installation made up of twenty wooden panels, engraved and painted, displayed at the Michael Werner gallery in Cologne in 1990.
