From 1960 to 1963 Baselitz painted the series P. D. Feet , which stands for “pandemonic feet”. They are puffed and swollen stumps brought to life by the shapeless chaos that made them. They are disjointed fragments of bodies which are intertwined or floating around in some irrational space in search of a story which the artist refuses to tell. Baslitz, more interested in committing the pulse of life to canvas rather than its narrative, creates a mass of capricious signs and ambiguous, unstable compositions which means that a shape without form changes into something recognizable, or one object changes into another, right in front of the viewer’s eyes. These works correspond to the artist’s need to express his own artistic language through symbols and a rich graphic vocabulary, and is developed from 1963 onwards through his use of incision. This technique, which culminated in the mid-Sixties with the series New types or Heroes, has a long tradition behind it: from the stains which Leonardo da Vinci urged people to look at because they developed genius, to the anamorphosis which the mannerist painters were so fond of, to the stain painting which was adopted by the Naturalist movement at the end of the 19th century.
