His search for a new kind of artistic approach centred on the carnality of the body takes a new turn in 1965 with the New Types and Heroes series, which Rebel also belongs to. The image is based on the articulation of colour and lines and on the essential relationship between figure and background. It is painted using free and assertive bush strokes and looks at the viewer face on, taking up the whole of the canvas. The young Rebel, with his torn clothes and flies undone, rather uncomfortably occupies a space which has become alien to him, and he gives the impression of filling rather than dominating the space now. If we look closely, the heroism which he so tragically vaunted has ended in farce. His rebellion against the violence he both suffered and inflicted, and against his defeated expectations fizzles out in a miserable act of masturbation whose tragic solipsism reveals the character’s fundamental impotency when it comes to changing either himself or society or proposing a valid alternative for humankind. The Rebel has its origins in his childhood memories when, in the countryside around Dresden, the artist saw lost or wounded soldiers wandering about, completely unable to integrate into post-war society. Baselitz uses this memory to tell the story of the war they lost and to criticize the authorities for their lies, as he himself explains in the article Why is the picture ‘Great Friends’ a good picture, which he wrote in 1966 to accompany his solo exhibition at the Rudolf Springer gallery in Berlin.
