Conceived specially for the exhibition, the original urban assemblage of Village consists of fifty dark empty dolls’ houses illuminated from inside. The installation, which recalls nativity scenes or the reconstruction of towns like Pompeii and Herculaneum, epitomize Whiteread’s exploration of the implications and social constraints on home building, exemplified in works like House (1990). In the mid-eighties she began collecting second-hand dolls’ houses from various periods and of different kinds: handmade toys that constituted true models of the home.
