In 1995, while working on the project for the Holocaust Monument in Vienna (1995-2000), Whiteread made a cast of three shelves with books and at the 1997 Venice Biennale she exhibited the outlines in negative of a bookcase (Untitled (Paperbacks)). She used old paperbacks, aligning them on a shelf and then immersing them in plaster. When this dried, shelf and books were physically removed, leaving in the negative the irregular profiles of the volumes the traces of their colours and fragments of print: melancholy phantoms of a knowledge now irremediably lost.
