Like Bruce Nauman in Space Under My Steel Chair (1965-68), in 1994 Whiteread made a cast of the space under a table and chair (Table and Chair (Cleir)). In 1995 she made a series of installations in synthetic resin of a serial and modular nature, consisting of the casts in negative of old wooden chairs of different forms ordered in perpendicular sequences. The dominant role played by the surface in plaster works is now played by the new dense and translucent material, which changes colour and consistency according to the light, conferring its own individual quality on each block.
