In Out IV

2000

Collection Ralph Goldenberg, London

The transformation of an ordinary object into an independent and evocative sculpture through the cast in negative of its form is evident in the In Out I-XIV (2000-04) series, in which the artist made a cast of both sides of fourteen house doors set together back to back. The new object, which is twice as thick as the original, acquires an unprecedented impressiveness, contrasting with its familiar appearance. Detached from their usual function, Whiteread’s doors invite the viewer to pass through them, but at the same time stress their confinement in a enclosed space, as In Out IV, IX and XIII show.
