Closet

1988

private Collection

Closet is one of the first sculptures Whiteread ever produced. She made it by making a cast of the inner space of an old wooden closet, in which all that was left inside was a partition with five shelves. The artist seeks to immortalize an everyday, familiar object, bound up above all with memories of her childhood. She recreates it materially by covering the form in black felt plaster which serves to convey the sense of enfolding darkness, fear and fascination experienced as a girl in that intimate and secret space, evocative - as the title suggests - of dark fantasies.
