Just as striking as the unspoilt jungles of Paradise (1998-2001) are the great forests of concrete and steel that arise in the new urban areas of Shanghai or Las Vegas. The most recent works, shot in colour and of large dimensions, present a strange hybrid between nature and culture and guide us into a space where the technology of the present becomes a global landscape. Choosing distances, heights and points of view capable of rendering the sense of challenge embodied in these buildings, Struth forces the eye beyond its normal powers of observation to illustrate in formal terms economic, cultural, social and natural situations which exist in the world. Skilfully homing in on what is worth looking at and capturing with the lens, he communicates the complexity of the present in its constant transformation or standardization.
Born at Geldern in 1954, Thomas Struth began his artistic training by studying painting under Peter Kleemann and Gerhard Richter at the Kunstakademie of Düsseldorf ...
