Thomas Struth
Via San Giovanni A Mare Neaples
1988

In Naples, which he visited in 1988, Struth focused his interest not only on individual buildings but on the movement of a certain street or square, the modulation of the profiles of the buildings facing onto the street, following each other in unbroken sequence as far as the horizon or superimposed on one another in a relationship both fluid and structured. Consisting of a measured juxtaposition of blacks and whites and built up on a dense interweaving of light and shade, these views present Naples suspended between past and present, metaphysical in its disordered, estranging silence, heightened by the absence of people or any living thing. This spectral theatricality and the meticulous rendering of every detail focuses attention on a context in itself banal or all too familiar, made up of buildings, cars, signs, street vistas, making it possible to recognize and examine the historical stratifications of the varied elements that create the urban and architectural fabric of the city, the ideological coherence or incongruities of the interests that have shaped it, continually transforming its economic or political order.
