Manzoni’s reflection on the value and significance of the pictorial act involved, however, a new founding of this art on new foundations. In the early sixties, he developed points of dialogue with both the conceptual research of Giulio Paolini, centered on the analysis of the “traditional and noble elements” of creative practice, the established forms and structures of painting and sculpture. There were also analogies with the monochrome canvases painted in enamel by Mario Schifano, the leading representative of Pop Art in Rome. With these artists Manzoni shared a further interest in the new myths and rituals of mass society, borrowed from Andy Warhol and American Pop Art, as suggested by his use of packaging in the Artist’s Shit series, the Lines, the kits he supplied with the Bodies of Air and a series of Achromes which came wrapped in brown paper and twine to form a true parcel secured with red wax and a metal seal.
